SUMMARY

At the fine arts museum in my hometown, there is a painting that has always unsettled me. It depicts a grieving woman, holding a handkerchief in her right hand and a sword pointed at her heart with the other. The caption says it is Didon, about to take her own life, despairing after being abandoned by Aeneas. During a conversation, I learn that Didon’s real name is actually Elyssa, and that her story is something entirely different…
